Math
In first grade, students learn about shapes, counting, adding, subtracting, comparing numbers, solving story problems, place value, measurement, coins/money and time.
Our first graders work through a math program called Eureka Math (formally Engage NY).
The following are our learning targets for each Quarter.
Quarter 1:
I can count to 20 from any number.
I can count from 1 to 100.
I can read, write, and compare numbers 0-20.
I can add and subtract within 3.
I can add and subtract within 5.
I can solve result unknown word problems using addition and subtraction within 10. (4 + 3 = ? and 10 - 2 = ?)
I can identify 2D shapes by name and describe them.
I can make several 2D shapes out of smaller shapes.
I can identify 3D shapes by name and describe them.
Quarter 2:
I can count to 80 from any number.
I can read, write, and compare numbers 0-50.
I can add and subtract pairs for 10.
I can solve change unknown word problems using addition and subtraction within 20. (5 + ? = 15 and 18 - ? = 7)
I can use commutative and associative properties to add and subtract. (3+5=8, 5+3=8, 8-3=5, 8-5=3)
Quarter 3:
I can count 1-120.
I can read, write, and compare numbers 0-99.
I can identify the tens and ones in a two digit number.
I can add and subtract to 6 and 7.
I can solve start unknown word problems using addition and subtraction within 20. (? + 10 = 15 and ? - 9 = 7)
Quarter 4:
I can count to 120 from any number.
I can add and subtract to 8 and 9.
I can read, write, and compare numbers 100-120
I can compare two 2-digit numbers based on place value.
I can add and subtract within 20 in word problems with unknowns in all positions.
