Reading and Writing
Reading
In first grade, students do LOTS of reading! Students have opportunities to read to their self, read to others and listen to reading. Students are also in guided reading groups where students work with me in small groups. We also do lots of read alouds as a class!
We will have guided reading groups each day to reinforce reading skills and writing skills. While I am involved in a guided reading group, the rest of the class will be participating in other beneficial independent reading activities.
We will learn new sounds and phonics skills each week. We will have weekly spelling words that will correspond to the phonics we learn each week.
We will focus on three types of writing this year: opinion, informative and narrative.
